Amethyst

Amethyst is a violet coloured variety of quartz and is often used in such things as jewellery. It can be found in a wide range of countries though most commonly from Brazil & Uruguay.

The name comes from the Ancient Greek ἀ a- ("not") and μέθυστος methustos ("intoxicated”) The ancient Greeks and Romans wore Amethyst and made drinking vessels out of it in the belief that would prevent intoxication (drunkenness)
