Gebel Kabil Meteorite

Type: Iron

Group: Iron, Ungrouped

First Found: 19th February 2009

Observed Fall: No

Country: Egypt

Fall Date: After 3000 BC

Around 1600kg of this Iron meteorite has been recovered since the crater was discovered in 2009-10 by a joint Italian/Egyptian geophysical research team.

Samples recovered range in weight from less than 1g to 3500g and a single large 83kg were found in and around the Kamil impact crater which measures around 45m across.

Many of the samples appear to be flat, jagged shrapnel like pieces with a dark brown surface colour. The surface of pieces found sitting in the desert soil show signs of terrestrial weathering which has produced oxy-hydroxides.

The main mass of these specimens are held at the Egyptian Geological Museum in Cairo, Egypt.

The Iron ungrouped classification of this meteorite stems from its not fitting into any of the established chemical groups of meteorites. An Iron meteorite is one that is dominantly composed of Fe-Ni metal and has crystallised from a melt.
